A Life Unrestricted: U.S. Green Card

Benefits of U.S. Permanent Residency (Green Card)

Obtaining U.S. permanent residency—commonly referred to as a Green Card—provides foreign nationals and their families with long-term stability, flexibility, and access to opportunities in the United States. For investors pursuing permanent residence through the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, the benefits extend well beyond the initial investment.

Below is an overview of some of the key advantages of U.S. permanent resident status.

Live & Work Anywhere in the United States

U.S. permanent residents may live and work anywhere in the United States without employer sponsorship. A Green Card holder is not tied to a specific employer, industry, or geographic location and may change jobs freely, pursue self-employment, or operate a business. With limited exceptions for certain government or security-sensitive positions reserved for U.S. citizens, permanent residents generally enjoy unrestricted access to the U.S. labor market.

Permanent residence also allows individuals to reside in the United States even if they are not actively employed, provided they continue to maintain their status.

Long-Term Stability for Families

U.S. permanent residence provides stability for spouses and children by allowing them to live, study, and work in the United States without the uncertainty associated with temporary visa renewals. Children may attend U.S. schools without maintaining separate nonimmigrant status, and families are not dependent on a single employer or visa sponsor to remain in the country.

Eligibility for U.S. Citizenship

After meeting statutory residence and physical presence requirements—typically five years as a lawful permanent resident—many Green Card holders may become eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization.

U.S. citizenship provides additional benefits, including the right to vote in federal elections, eligibility for certain public offices, and the ability to obtain a U.S. passport.

International Travel Flexibility

Lawful permanent residents may travel internationally and reenter the United States using their Green Card, subject to maintaining residence and avoiding extended absences.

Upon naturalization, U.S. citizens may obtain a U.S. passport, which provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a large number of countries worldwide. While visa policies vary by destination and may change over time, the U.S. passport is consistently regarded as one of the most widely accepted travel documents globally.
